The League is proud to announce a new multi-year pledge to support the work of Jeffrey Burns, MD, MPH, as he strives to create a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit – Without Walls. The objective of the PICU – Without Walls is to create a comprehensive website dedicated to providing multimedia educational resources on optimal care of the critically ill child to caregivers worldwide.Dr. Burns was motivated to create this internet-based training and learning model to address the shortage of physicians skilled in the care of critically ill children worldwide. Training on how to expertly treat children with life threatening illnesses remains anchored within the walls of the few hospitals with this unique training capability. |

| With the unparalleled reach of the Internet and advancements in technology, Dr. Burns saw the opportunity to take the precious knowledge of experts and clinical protocols and share them across the globe. With the League’s support, Dr. Burns is moving toward a limited beta release of a prototype website. This beta release will provide one Internet website for video-based teaching from international experts; protocols on best practices; a pediatric mechanical ventilation simulator for interactive learning of actual practice; and an on-line question and answer portal so that clinicians around the world can share and exchange insights with colleagues both near and far. Nearly 10 years ago, the League teamed with Dr. Burns to support him in developing the Simulator Program at Children’s Hospital Boston. This program is recognized as one of the most sophisticated and integrated postgraduate medical training programs at any pediatric hospital across the world. The League is thrilled to be partnering with Dr. Burns again as he pursues his dream of leveraging existing knowledge to provide advanced learning opportunities to clinicians around the world for the benefit of any child, anywhere. |
